What class are you playing?

I only have the first Player's Handbook for 4th edition, and I can't find anything about a magic totem. Sounds like a druid, in which case I don't yet have the rulebook for it.

Sounds like you're playing 4th edition. 1[W] stands for 1 x your weapon's damage roll. So you'll need to look up how much damage your wielded weapons causes.

Since each player will have different weapon preferences, and is thus unpredictable, this kind of notation makes a bit more sense.

On a character sheet I got off the internet, when I put in magic totem, it set up an evocation attack next to my basic melee attack. This would be all fine and dandy for the damage info is messed up so now i need to calculate it myself. However I don't know how. Any advice?

First, on some of my artificer spells it says 1[W]+ intelligence mod. damage. What does the 1[W] mean? :???:

And second, what is the amount of XP to get to the 3rd, 4th, and levels after that that? :???:

Please reply :!:

Really handy. Thanks for the guide

My friends and myself are trying to get into d&d but we don't have the slightest idea how to play, no doubt we'll be referring to this during our first game!

Don't worry, I plan to!

However, even though 4th Edition is just around the corner (this Friday in fact!), 3.5 is still going to be relevant for quite some time.

Nice article, as usual. However, I think it would be a great idea if you created same "Beginner" articles for DnD 4E (once you will be familiar with the system ofc.) It should also bring you a hell lot of traffic ;)
