Free Character Generators

While I may have been writing on how to create a D&D character for beginners, I’m sure there’s a number of people who are still a bit overwhelmed with character creation. If you’re one of them, I don’t blame you at all. It really is a lot of information to take in at once, and I know it can get quite confusing. It was the same way with me when I first started.

So to help alleviate the pain of creating a D&D character, I thought I’d share a few free character generators! :)

First, a couple that will run right in your web browser are:

Just make sure you have Javascript enabled for whichever one you use, otherwise it won’t work.

Then there’s the fairly popular, but moderately complex, open-source, and award-winning character generator:

Of course, these generators can help both beginners and veterans alike. It’ll make the process a bit more easy for the beginner, while the veteran can fly through character creation and be ready to play in relatively quick order. They can also make management of your character a tad easier as well, particularly PCGen, as you can go back and edit your character whenever you level up.

While these character generators are about the only ones that come to mind, I’m sure there are others. If you have a favorite character generator that’s not one of the above, please share it in a comment! :)

If you like this post, buy me an ale!

Good idea. However, I think there is very little chance that beginning players will find your blog and the links.
That’s sad… :???:

Based on the keywords that are being used on search engines that are leading more people to this blog, I think beginners are starting to find it.

In fact, my traffic has increased because of my beginner articles. I’m pretty sure that means something too.

Stay strong, do you’re best, be yourself, hang on tight. Things are always better in the end; and if they aren’t better it’s not the end.

These links are great, I like the generators and all but I was wondering if anyone knew of a text document that’s around 50 pages that can be used much like the Players Book simply for character creation.

We’re trying to keep everyone in the group from having to sit on a computer during sessions. That and I’d be able to print out multiple of these books so that the group can all make their characters at once instead of one at a time.

I know i’m probably asking for a lot and keeping profits from WotC but we can’t afford 5 or more of the books and most of the people in my group don’t want/need all the extra info.
(I’m trying to create my own but am getting lost in the “what to cut” area, so help there would also be appreciated).

Thanks in advance for any help, thoughts and suggestions.

As long as you’re running 3.0 or 3.5, the SRD should be good enough for your purposes:

I highly suggest on getting the PCGEN and taking the time to learn it. Personally, I will never go back to manually writing up a character sheet, it is far too ardous.

Also please check out Pathfinder RPG if you want to run an updated 3.5 and not 4.

My personal favorite was always Redblade, before PCGen of course. It’s supposedly still in development for the newer system, 4e, but the 3.5 is very simple to edit and customize (though not as in depth as PCGen). It’s a little nicer and compact visually in comparison to PCGen, but what it lacks in ‘depth’ it makes up for quick character generating.
