Free Music For Your D&D Campaign

I’ve finally picked up my first copy of Dragon magazine (the May 2007 issue), despite the fact that it’ll be going out of print soon, and so far I’ve been liking what I’ve been reading. The iDragon: Modern Music in D&D is a pretty good resource to those looking to start using music in their D&D campaign but don’t know where to begin. It covers various kinds of media you can use, as well as where you can get your music. They even show some playlists they’ve created, which can also be seen in the iMix section of the iTunes store.
However, not all of us can afford to pay for a whole bunch of songs, or may not even like some of the songs listed. There’s also the matter of DRM, which can interfere with your use of the music you purchase and download. So, I thought it would be nice to share some sources of music that are not only completely free, but also completely DRM-less.
- OverClocked ReMix - A huge collection of some of the best remixes of video game music!
- VGMix - A site in a similar vein as OCRemix, but less stringent entry requirements. Unfortunately, this site has been down for about a year for a complete rewrite, as they were having trouble with crackers previously.
- Newground Audio Portal - A huge collection of unique music! Most of the music found here is generally meant to be used in some sort of Flash animation, but can easily be used for other purposes, including D&D!
- Jamendo - A huge collection of music created by what seems to be independent artists from around the world. There’s some good stuff to be found here!
So next time you use music in D&D, or even if it’s your first time, check out some of the music from the sites I’ve listed. I’m sure you can find some stuff that will fit your campaign quite well, whether you’re looking for ambient music or music to fit a theme for various characters.
What other resources (that won’t get you sued by the RIAA) do you use to get your music? The more this list can be expanded, the more music we can all have at our fingertips. And of course, it’ll just help us all become better DMs! ![]()
