Some Good CRPG Timewasters

In the early days of PC gaming, when the idea of graphics was taking ASCII characters and arranging them into shapes, some good classics rose up to become the founding fathers of more modern gaming. Ultima, of course, is one of them. However, another one that appeared that same year, Rogue (wikipedia entry), didn’t receive as much attention. However, Rogue follows conventions that any fan of D&D can recognize.

So, for your amusement, here are some good, classic CRPGs that you can get for free:

  • Rogue – The first game to change how we think about CRPGs.
  • NetHack – The successor to Hack, which is the successor to Rogue.
  • Tyrant – Another Rogue-like game using graphical tiles. While fun, there is an occasional bug, and it’s no longer supported.

Also, for those of you who are sick and tired of all the hack and slash MMOs:

  • Progress Quest – Just sit back and relax as you automatically hack and slash your way to glory. ;)

If you know of other good classics, or good spoofs, I’d love to hear about it! :)

If you like this post, buy me an ale!
