Start a Novel Campaign

Have you ever just been stuck as to what to do for your next D&D campaign? Or maybe you’re just sick and tired of the typical campaign settings, and want something new for a change. Well, if you can’t think up of something on your own, why not turn to your favorite fantasy novels? Here’s a few novels or series of novels that may be worth using for your next campaign:

  1. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - Even though D&D is more or less based on this series, it still a very good world to base a campaign in. Good old good vs. evil conflicts abound, and the world is already familiar to many people. And this may definitely be a good one if all your players are Tolkien fans! ;-)
  2. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling - Though not your typical roleplaying setting, it definitely seems like a very interesting world to explore! You could have a campaign based in Hogwarts, with the Ministry of Magic, or even elsewhere! J. K . Rowling has given us all a very fascinating world to check out. :)
  3. The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson - This is really a sci-fi series, but also ripe for some good roleplaying. You can perhaps take part as one of the first colonists on Mars, trying to build up a livable infrastructure. Or you could play a part during the conflict between Mars and Earth. You could even set the campaign on Earth, basing it on the troubles that Earth faces while Mars is being colonized!
  4. The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold - Another sci-fi series that holds a good amount of adventure, fitting for a D&D adventure or two. Bujold has crafted an interesting world, featuring two prominent human races, the Betans (peaceful, technological) and Barrayarans (war-like, not as technologically inclined). You could create a campaign about a science team doing research, but being harried by Barrayaran forces. Or perhaps the players could be Barrayarans themselves, dealing with the difficulties of their homeworld of Barrayar.

These are merely four examples of novel series that could be utilized to craft a new campaign for your D&D group. There are many others out there that may be just as good to use as well. And hey, if you like a particular series of books, why not go ahead and do something more with them? It may be a lot of fun to explore the worlds created by other authors! :)

Vorkosigan squee!

Actually, Harry Turtledove’s The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump would make a really AWESOME modern fantasy campaign setting. Magic-powered technology, reciprocal environmental costs from magic, demon-strations, flying carpets on the freeway… I know his WorldWar books were under consideration from the d20 system but neither that nor the console game ever came through.

I loved the Amber role-playing game which was based on the Roger Zelazny novels. The setting could be adapted to d20.

I think a DND campaign set in Frank Herbert’s Dune novels would be interesting, but I can’t think of a plotline offhand.
